Anxiety on its own is a common feeling of uneasiness, distress, worry, apprehension or fear. We all experience anxiety at some point in our lives. If these feelings escalate to interfere with daily life, then, this may be a sign of an anxiety disorder. The term ‘anxiety disorder’ covers several specific disorders, each with their own signs and symptoms.
Symptoms that may be considered an anxiety disorder include:
· Excessive worry
· Physical symptoms (chest tightness, shortness of breath, racing heart, nausea, upset stomach, dizziness, sweaty palms, etc)
· Panic attacks
· Trouble concentrating
· Obsessions and compulsions
· Avoiding crowds, social situations, places where escape may be problematic
Anxiety can be treated through medication management, counseling, exercise, and through other modalities. Meditation, exercise, or just spending more time outside doing something you enjoy may also help anxiety symptoms tremendously.
