Anxiety on its own is a common feeling of uneasiness, distress, worry, apprehension or fear. We all experience anxiety at some point in our lives. If these feelings escalate to interfere with daily life, then, this may be a sign of an anxiety disorder. The term ‘anxiety disorder’ covers several specific disorders, each with their own signs and symptoms.
Symptoms that may be considered an anxiety disorder include:
· Excessive worry
· Physical symptoms (chest tightness, shortness of breath, racing heart, nausea, upset stomach, dizziness, sweaty palms, etc)
· Panic attacks
· Trouble concentrating
· Obsessions and compulsions
· Avoiding crowds, social situations, places where escape may be problematic
Types of Anxiety Disorders include OCD, PTSD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, and Panic Disorder. Anxiety Disorders are evaluated and assessed by your provider during your initial psychiatric evaluation and throughout the course of treatment.
Anxiety can be treated through medication management through medications such as SSRIs like Prozac, Zoloft, Lexapro, and Celexa and through other as needed medications such as as benzodiazipines including Valium and Klonopin. Counseling, exercise, meditation, exercise, or just spending more time outside doing something you enjoy may also help anxiety symptoms tremendously.
